Abstract: According to cognitive grammar, language is an integral part of cognition. Thus, as the linguistic expression of a poet’s spontaneous thoughts, poetry will naturally reflect the poet’s cognitive activity. Emily Dickinson, an original and preeminent poet in American literature, has left us priceless heritage in poetry. And death, as one of her favorite motifs, could definitely not be passed over if one wants to have a good command of Dickinson’s poems. The article attempts to analyze the conceptual metaphor in the poem A clock stopped— from the perspective of disengagement in Cognitive Grammar, and manages to reveal the theme of the poem during the process. Through the analysis, it can be safely concluded that the theories in Cognitive Grammar can forge a happy marriage with literature criticism.

Abstract: This research specifically studied the morphosyntactic property: verb formation process in Angguruk Dialect of Yali Language (thereafter called ADYL). ADYL is one out of 274 local languages in Papua and West-Papua Province. The speaker population of ADYL consists of 15000 persons. The method employed in this research was descriptive qualitative method. The technique of analyzing data used was syntactic basic operating technique called ‘morphological merger’ as logical demand of distributed morphology theory. From the result of analysis, a number of morphosyntactic properties were found supporting the creation of morphosyntactic verb. They were: (1) mood and its sub-classification; (2) aspect and its sub-classification; (3) tense and its sub-classification; (4) the compatibility of subject to its sub-classification (subject agreement); (5) intensifier and its sub-classification; (6) object possessor markerandits sub-classification; (7) accusative object marker and its sub-classification, (8) causative verb marker; (9) reciprocal diathesis marker and its sub-classification, and (10) diathesis marker. All of those morphosyntactic properties have implication to the creation of morphosyntactic verb in ADYL.

Abstract: Diversity is an important issue of our present world representing strength or nuisance given the richness it supplies us with or the conflicts it engenders affecting the nation’s social, cultural, political and management levels. Regarding the many issues associated with diversity, this paper explores linguistic diversity and the ways it has been dealt with according to whether it is considered as a resource requiring investment or a disturbance requiring strategies of management. If at far epochs linguistic diversity was so natural as to require no explanation, with the rise of state building movement, linguistic diversity became subject to state policy processing. Given the side effects resulting from policy implementation, trends of linguistic human rights and language diversity protection are developing though seemingly defend linguistic diversity nourish conflicts which may minimize if minority linguistic communities develop loyalty to the larger linguistic group by sharing equally social, political and economic benefits.

Abstract: The study is to describe the results of back-translation test on the students’ translation. The students are those of German Dept., Faculty of Letters, in the State University of Malang. The assessment is on the meaning and form equivalence. The method used is a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. The research includes the analysis and the repeated readings on the data sources, data classification, data analysis, peer group discussion, revision, and conclusion drawing. The data sources are the students’ translation on a short story, Das Brot. The data were collected by reading and recording. The analysis was done by comparison method. The result of the analysis shows that most of the students’ work have been equivalent to its source text. The unequal realization identified is due to improper lexicon selection and transposition.
